Oblivious Lyrics By Christy Moore

5/26/2016

Oblivious was written and recorded by singer / songwriter by Mick Blake. It was recorded in 2016 by Christy Moore [ song words ] and is on Christy's latest album ''Lily''. The song is a dig at some Irish people who vote for the same political parties during every general election.

Chorus
What will it take to make us angry ?
Where is the spark to light our flame ?
We've been sold out taken in yet blindly
We'll do it all again, we'll fuel that grave train,

oblivious, it's like were oblivious
We stick with the tribe and we stand by our man
Whipped into shame by this great master plan
Stuck in a spiral still fighting an old civil war

The men and the women of nineteen sixteen
Risked their lives for a national dream
A hundred years later and what was it all for
Hear their voices resounding

Calling to me and to you
All that they dreamed for and died for
Has been squandered by scoundrels and fools
Is this the best we can do.

What will it take to make us angry ?
Where is that line that can't be crossed
We've been sold out taken in yet blindly
We'll do it all again, we'll fuel that grave train,
oblivious, it's like were oblivious.

So when they give all that you treasure away for a pittance
Or banish your children to toil on a rich foreign shore
When they prey on the weakest and bow to the ones that have plenty
They know that you'll follow blindly as you did before.

Imagine a nation where people are free not slaves to some gombeenman economy
Sold into bondage one ill fated September night,
where smooth talking sleeveens don't spin and pretend
Their promises not just a means to an end and justice isn't what's legal
It's what is right

But the king of Islandeady echoes the cries of the clown
Heaps pain on the sick and needy to soften the Ice-maiden's frown
And we take it all lying down

Here's the guitar chords for the Mick Blake version

Chorus
[C]What will it take [F]to make us [C]angry[F] ?
[Am]Where is the [F]spark to light our [C]flame[G] ?
We've been [Am]sold out [F]taken in yet [C]blindly[F]
We'll do it [G]all a[F]gain, we'll fuel [Em]that grave [F]train,

o[Dm]blivio[F]us, it's like were [Dm]oblivious
We [C]stick with the tribe and we [Em]stand by our man
[Am]Whipped into shame by this great master [F]plan
[C]Stuck in a spiral still [Em]fighting an old ci[F]vil war

[C]Back in the day we had[Em] men of esteem
[Am]Risked their lives for a [F]national dream
A [C]century away  [Em]what was it all[F] for
Hear their voices down the [C]decades

[F]Calling to me and to [C]you
[F]All that they dreamed for and [Em]died for
Has been [F]squandered by scoundrels and [Dm]fools
Is this [F]really the best we can [G]do.

Tell me [C]What will it [F]take to make us [C]angry[F] ?
[Am]Where is that [F]line that can't be [C]crossed[G]
[Am]We've been sold out [F]taken in yet [C]blindly[F]
We'll do it [Em]all a[F]gain, we'll [Em]fuel that grave [F]train,
o[Dm]blivious,,,,[G]  o[C]blivio[G]us[C].

So [F]when they give all that you treasure away for a [C]pittance
Or [F]banish your children to toil on a rich foreign [C]shore
When they [F]prey on the weakest and bow to the ones that have [Em]plenty,,[Am]
They [Dm]know that you'll follow blindly as you did be[G]fore.

I[C]magine a nation where [Em]people are free not [Am]slaves to some gombeenman e[F]conomy
[C]Sold into bondage one [Em]ill fated September [F]night, [C],,[F]
where [C]smooth talking sleeveens don't [Em]spin and pretend
Their [Am]promises not just a [F]means to an end and [C]justice isn't what's [Em]legal
It's what is [F]right

But the king of Island[C]eady [F]echoes the cries of the [C]clown
Heaps [F]pain on the sick and [Em]needy to [F]soften the Ice-maiden's [Dm]frown
And [F]we take it all lying [G]down

This song should be better known. Although specifically aimed at Irish voters, it is true for any political system where the voters "would vote for a donkey it sported the right rosette"
