Example of a song from The Tin Whistle Songbook
Comment / review
Raymond ohora left a nice comment in the guest book which reads ''thanks for the book. with all the books I have this is 100 times better then all the rest put together keep up the good work''

Thanks Raymond, it was hard work putting it together but well worth it.

Just received this fantastic book which is an instant start to playing the tunes you know on the tin whistle.
It is simple and printed clearly on every page to get you playing at a rate of knots, a must for every tin whistle owner.
John Thompson

Please feel free to paste this on your website
regards John.

I have always had a tin whistle since I was 12 years old (a late starter) but had no teaching or contact with other whistle players until I was 55. It's only then that I started to get serious about playing and your web-site was the catalyst, that did it for me. Last week was a very special week for me because I got a Dixon low D whistle AND your smashing Tin Whistle Song Book. I wanted you to know how much I value and appreciate the work you do. Thank you so much Martin. Paul Roberts
Good morning Martin, I got your lovely book on Monday. As a total beginning with music the book is everything that it promises, so easy to follow and  fun to learn, its nice to be able to play tunes straight away......mind you I have a long way to go.
Thank you Martin.
Noreen

Hi Martin, Just a quick email to let you know the Tin Whistle song book arrived this morning , To say I’m impressed is an understatement, The content, Layout, explanation and the little piece on each tunes history is simply superb, as I journeyed through the pages not only did I see tunes I played on the Whistle as a child in school but also got a little history lesson on the way, This little book is packed with music and history of my nations most loved tunes , definitely a must for all want to play a traditional musical instrument , thanks Martin for your fantastic work, please keep it up for all of us
My sincere gratitude and thanks,
Kind regards Ken

Hi Martin, Your book arrived this morning - brilliant!. I love the way it's laid out with drawings and historical notes - and I can already play some of the easier tunes. Many thanks.  Do you have other publications?
Best wishes
Jim
Tip for playing the same song in a different key.
Say for example your using a D whistle and playing a song using the sheet music from my book, [not the letter notes] and you change from your D whistle to your C whistle. Just play the song as if you are using your D whistle, but you'll actually be playing in the key of C.
Here's just a couple of the wonderful emails I received regarding the book.
Hi Martin,
Received your excellent book this morning and it's absolutely brilliant. I've been a fan of your website for years and just wanted to drop you a line to commend you and thank you for all the work you do in providing invaluable resources for people to learn Irish music. Feel free to use this email as a recommendation for others to purchase your wonderful tin whistle book.
Many thanks,
Glenn

Hi Martin
You site has been an excellent resource to me
throughout my years of being a musician.  Your choice in the songs you choose is excellent.
I play the guitar in the Hardy Bucks Band .
I always wanted to play the tin whistle so decided to purchase the book and also support you!
Your site is the go to site if I'm looking for lyrics for a song and has been wonderful.
I agree with you that is very sad that more of the National stations do not play the songs that tell the stories of our people.
Patrick R.

Hi Martin, thank you for the tin whistle book. I received it a couple of weeks ago. I always wanted to play an instrument but had a bad experience as a child at school which convinced me I couldn't learn to play. Your book has really help me and i'm doing far better with it then I ever thought possible.
Thanks again
Martin J

I'd like to say a big thank you to all those parents, especially who bought the book for their children, and thanks also for your kind words you sent to me after receiving the book, it means a lot to me.Also a big thanks to all the school teachers that bought the book and now use it to teach their class. It seems that the finger position for the notes in the songs is what people really wanted, plus the basic easy to follow letter note system.

You don't need to be able to read sheet music tabs to play any of the songs in this book. This Tin Whistle song book has over 100 well known folk songs. There's also a selection of children's songs and some well known Christmas Carols. Along with the sheet music I have included the ''Letter Notes''. Millions of people start off using basic letter notes before moving on to reading sheet music. Those who use letter notes will already be familiar with the tune of the song they are trying to learn. The melody is in their head and all they want is somebody to tell them which notes to play.

In this book I place the notes to play over the lyrics. For example If the note is a low D then I use CAPITAL letters and if the note is a high d I use lower case letters. All the songs are in easy keys such as D and G. Every song can be played on a D whistle. These easy to follow letter notes are also suitable for other lead instruments such as piano accordion, banjo, keyboard, mandolin and recorder.

It takes a bit longer for some people to learn how to read sheet music. This is  where placing sheet music tabs in the book beside the letter note version of the song  comes in handy. When your reading the letter notes you can also see the notes on the sheet music and the similarities, you might see a song starting off that has three D notes in the letter note version and you'll notice three whole notes  on the sheet music version at the start. After a while you'll begin to get better at reading the sheet music and may not need the letter note version again.

There are millions of people out there who would dearly love to be able to play a musical instrument and the thought of having to learn how to read sheet music seems to daunting a task. Some people might say let them stick at it and they'll eventually be able to read music. Well perhaps some would, but a large proportion give up and will never know the joy of sitting at their kitchen table playing their favorite song or tune. I think that's a shame and that's the reason I included the basic lead notes in letter note form.

If these letter notes I have made up help just a handful of people along their way then all the countless months I spent working on them will be worth it. So this book will be a God-send to those who don't read sheet music and just want to play their favorite and most popular folk songs of all time. Where possible I have included the lyrics inside the sheet music, but in some songs the notes are packed too tight to be able to do so.
This is the biggest collection of ''Songs'' ever to be placed together in one single book and is for children of all ages and those just starting or wanting to improve their playing.
So can you use any tin to play these song ?
Although I worked these songs out on a D whistle, you can still play them on a whistle in a different key.
Just play along to the finger hole shapes within the sheet music.
If your playing a Bb whistle for example, and you play finger hole shapes then you'll be playing in the key of Bb.
If your playing a C whistle then you'll be playing in the key of C.
Picture
The piece of music above is in the key of G. Notice the 1 sharp # sign at the start of the music, this means it's in G.
If you see 2 # symbols then the piece will be in the key of D.
But you don't need a tin whistle in the key of G to play these pieces when using the simple finger hole shapes, you can play the song using any key of whistle.
