Rebel Songs For Tin Whistle
here are a few songs that use the same tune. The first is Wrap The Green Flag [ lyrics ] by J.K. O'Reilly which was written before Ireland's Fight For Freedom. This tune is usually played at Republican Funerals by a lone piper, in fact it was played at the funeral of Bobby Sands. They are easy to play, you just keep repeating it over and over. Watch for the high D' Note in the 5th line of each tune. The other song is Brave Tom Williams.
Here's a list of the rebel / ballads songs that are in my tin whistle songbook.

Rebel songs [ Political Songs ] have been part of the Irish music culture since the middle ages, going back to the harpers of old. They are included in most ballad sessions around Ireland to the present day.
But they don't form the whole of the ballad session, they are usually mixed in with the folk songs and traditional tunes, and that's what makes a great session. Unless your a die-hard purest you don't wan't to be listening to rebel songs all night. And if your a musician you don't want to be playing them all night. Take The Wolfe Tones for example, have a look at their albums for the past 50 years and you'll see that most of their songs have being general folk songs of old. Only about 20% of their songs are what's called ''Rebel''. And yet if you were to ask anybody to describe The Wolfe Tone's music most would say they are a rebel group. |
