True[Am] you ride the finest horse I've[F] ever seen
[G]Standing sixteen one or two with eyes[Am] wild and green
And[Am] you ride the horse so well hands[F] light to the totch
[G]I could never go with you no matter how I[Am] wanted to

[Chorus]
[Am]Ride on,[F]see you,
[G]I could never go with you no matter how I[Am] wanted to

When you ride into the night without a trace behind
Run your claw along my gut one last time
I turn to face an empty space where you used to lie
And look for the smile to light the night through a teardrop in my eye.
[Chorus twice]
Below is the full version with chords on all lines, a strumming pattern, and a fingerpicking tab for the first verse and chorus. Everything is in A minor, the traditional key for the song.

🎸 Strumming Pattern (6/8 feel)

This song works best with a slow rolling 6/8 rhythm, giving that Celtic lilt.

Pattern:

D   D U D U
1   2 3 4 5 6

Emphasize the first downstroke (beat 1) for the pulse.

Keep the upstrokes gentle, almost like waves.

You can also simplify it to just D – D U per bar for a more intimate performance.

Example feel:
D D U D U | D D U D U (slow, steady waltz swing)

🎶 Fingerpicking Tab (Intro / Verse 1 & Chorus)

This tab follows the same chords and rhythm as the sung melody — a calm rolling pattern in 6/8 time.
Use standard tuning (EADGBE).

Fingerpicking Pattern (6/8)

Right-hand:

Thumb (p) – bass note (A or E string)
Index (i) – G string
Middle (m) – B string
Ring (a) – high E string

Pattern per bar:

p   i m a i m
1 2 3 4 5 6

✅ Performance Tips:

Keep a slow 6/8 pulse, let each bass note ring clearly.

Use your thumb for bass and fingers for the arpeggio roll.

For later verses, you can transition smoothly to gentle strumming for dynamic contrast.
