[G]Farewell the colliery workers, the [D]muffler and the [G]cap
Fare[C]well the Rhondda valley girls, we (G)never will come back
The mines they are a-(C)closin', the (Amin)valleys they're all (D)doomed
There's (G)no work in the (C)Rhondda boys, we'll (D)be in London (G)soon
(G)My father was a miner, and his (C)father was before him,
And they (D)always had been proud to work be(G)low.
Since they fell 'neath Roben's axe,
All the (C)lads have had the sack
So a(D)way to work in England we must (G)go!

Farewell the colliery workers, the muffler and the cap
Farewell the Rhondda valley girls, we never will come back
The mines they are a-closin', the valleys they're all doomed
There's no work in the Rhondda boys, we'll be in London soon

No more the chapel singin', for that long ago has left us
In the public house no more the miner's songs
Oh, the population's droppin'
For the pit wheels they are stoppin',
And I can't afford to stay here very long

Farewell the colliery workers, the muffler and the cap
Farewell the Rhondda valley girls, we never will come back
The mines they are a-closin', the valleys they're all doomed
There's no work in the Rhondda boys, we'll be in London soon

Treherbert and Treorchy, Tonypandy and Tynewydd
Ystradrhondda and Tonpentre, all adeiu
For I can no longer wait
While Parliament debates
So a fond farewell I bid to all of you!

Farewell the colliery workers, the muffler and the cap
Farewell the Rhondda valley girls, we never will come back
The mines they are a-closin', the valleys they're all doomed
There's no work in the Rhondda boys, we'll be in London
🎵 Farewell the Colliery Workers

Key: G Major
Tempo: Slow–Moderate Folk March (about 80–90 BPM)
Time Signature: 4/4

🎸 Strumming Pattern

For a steady folk rhythm that suits the song’s somber feel:

Down – Down – Up – Down – Up (↓ ↓↑ ↓↑)

Or, for a slower and more emotional feel during verses:

Down… Down… Down-Up…

Accent the first Down lightly; let chords ring clearly to evoke the “miners’ march” sound.

Verse 1
[G]Farewell the colliery workers, the [D]muffler and the [G]cap
Fare[C]well the Rhondda valley girls, we [G]never will come back
The mines they are a-[C]closin', the [Am]valleys they're all [D]doomed
There's [G]no work in the [C]Rhondda boys, we'll [D]be in London [G]soon

Verse 2
[G]My father was a miner, and his [C]father was before him,
And they [D]always had been proud to work be[G]low.
Since they fell 'neath Roben's axe,
All the [C]lads have had the sack
So a[D]way to work in England we must [G]go!

→ Repeat Chorus (first verse again)

[G]Farewell the colliery workers, the [D]muffler and the [G]cap
Fare[C]well the Rhondda valley girls, we [G]never will come back
The mines they are a-[C]closin', the [Am]valleys they're all [D]doomed
There's [G]no work in the [C]Rhondda boys, we'll [D]be in London [G]soon

Verse 3
[G]No more the chapel singin', for that [C]long ago has left us
In the [D]public house no more the miner's [G]songs
Oh, the population's droppin'
For the [C]pit wheels they are stoppin'
And I [D]can't afford to stay here very [G]long

→ Repeat Chorus

Verse 4
[G]Treherbert and Treorchy, T[C]onypandy and Tynewydd
Ystra[D]dhondda and Tonpentre, all a[G]dieu
For I can no longer wait
While [C]Parliament debates
So a [D]fond farewell I bid to all of [G]you!

→ Final Chorus — softer at first, then crescendo on last line:

[G]Farewell the colliery workers, the [D]muffler and the [G]cap
Fare[C]well the Rhondda valley girls, we [G]never will come back
The mines they are a-[C]closin', the [Am]valleys they're all [D]doomed
There's [G]no work in the [C]Rhondda boys, we'll [D]be in London [G]soon

🎶 Performance Notes

Use light fingerpicking for the first verse, then move to full strumming by verse two.

For emotional effect, slow slightly on the last line of each chorus (“...we’ll be in London soon”).

End on a gentle G chord, letting it ring out to silence.
Here are the guitar chords as played by The New Barleycorn

(B)My father was a miner, and his (E)father was before him,
they (F#)always had been proud to work be(B)low[F#].
Since [B]they fell 'neath Roben's axe,
All [E]the lads have had the sack
So a(F#)way to work in England we must (B)go[C]!

Fare[B]well the colliery workers, the muffler and the cap
Fare[E]well the Rhondda valley girls, we (B)never will come [F#]back
The [B]mines they are a-(E)closin', the valleys they're [F#]all doomed
There's (B)no work in the (F#)Rhondda boys, we'll be in London (B)soon.
