The Rose Of Mooncoin Lyrics And Guitar Chords

Written by Watt Murphy in 1826. And Still A Classic Song. Recorded by Sean Dunphy, Johnny McEvoy who sings in the youtube video, Bridie Gallagher who sang one of my favorite folk songs ''A Mother's Love's A Blessing '', and Ryans Fancy. The Kilkenny Banner Song.  An Irish folk song. Irish country singer Mike Denver recorded the song in an upbeat temp.
The Rose Of Mooncoin Lyrics And Chords In D Major

Oh[D] how steet 'tis to roam by the[G] Sure's lovely [D]stream
And to[A] hear the birds[G] coo 'neath the mor[D]ning sun[F#m] beams
Where[d] the thrush and the robin their[G] sweet notes en[D]twine
On the[A] banks of the[G] Suir that flows[A7] down by Moon[D]coin

[Chorus]
Flow on lovely river flow gently along
By your waters so sweet
Sounds the Lark's merry song
On your green banks I'll wander
Where first I did join
With you lovely Molly, the rose of Mooncoin

Oh Molly dear Molly it breaks my fond heart
To know that we two for each must part
I'll think of you Molly while sun and moon shine
On the banks of the Suir that flow down by Mooncoin

She has sailed far away o're the dark rolling foam
Far away from the hills of her dear Irish home
Where the fisherman sports with his small boat and line
On the banks of the suir that flows down by Mooncoin

Then here's to the Suir with it's valleys so fair
As off times we wandered in the cool morning air
Where the roses are blooming and lilies entwine
On the banks of the Suir that flows down by Mooncoin

Verse 1

Oh [G]how sweet 'tis to [C]roam by the [G]Suir's lovely [D]stream,
And to [A7]hear the birds [C]coo 'neath the [G]morning sun [Em]beams,
Where the [Am]thrush and the robin their [C]sweet notes en[G]twine,
On the [D]banks of the [C]Suir that flows [A7]down by Moon[G]coin.

Chorus

Flow [C]on, lovely [G]river, flow [Am]gently a[D]long,
By your [C]waters so [G]sweet sounds the [Am]lark’s merry [D]song.
On your [G]green banks I’ll [C]wander where [G]first I did [D]join,
With you [G]lovely [C]Molly, the [A7]Rose of Moon[G]coin.

Verse 2

Oh [G]Molly, dear [C]Molly, it [G]breaks my fond [D]heart,
To [A7]know that we [C]two for a [G]while now must [Em]part.
I’ll [Am]think of you, Molly, while [C]sun and moon [G]shine,
On the [D]banks of the [C]Suir that flows [A7]down by Moon[G]coin.

→ Chorus

Verse 3

She has [G]sailed far a[C]way o’er the [G]dark rolling [D]foam,

Where the [Am]fisherman sports with his [C]small boat and [G]line,
On the [D]banks of the [C]Suir that flows [A7]down by Moon[G]coin.

→ Chorus

Verse 4

Then [G]here’s to the [C]Suir with its [G]valleys so [D]fair,
As [A7]oft-times we [C]wandered in the [G]cool morning [Em]air,
Where the [Am]roses are blooming and [C]lilies en[G]twine,
On the [D]banks of the [C]Suir that flows [A7]down by Moon[G]coin.

→ Final Chorus (slow and tender)

🎸 Strumming Pattern (3/4 Waltz Feel)

Gentle, lilting pattern for Irish ballads:

↓ ↓↑ ↑↓
(count “1 2-and 3-and”)

OR a softer version:

Bass (↓) – Down (↓) – Up (↑)
(where the first beat is a single bass note, then a flowing 2–3 strum)

Use fingerpicking for the 1st verse (as above).

Begin soft strumming from Verse 2 onward.

For the final chorus, slow the tempo slightly and let each chord ring.

💡 Performance Tips

G–C–D–A7 progression is classic — let chords ring warmly.

Add hammer-ons on G (A→B on 5th string) and C (D→E on 4th string) for Irish ornamentation.

End gently: final “Mooncoin” can be a G → C → G slow cadence.
Key Of C Major

Oh[C] how steet 'tis to roam by the[F] Sure's lovely [C]stream
And to[G] hear the birds[F] coo 'neath the mor[C]ning sun[Em] beams
Where[d] the thrush and the robin their[F] sweet notes en[C]twine
On the[G] banks of the[F] Suir that flows[G7] down by Moon[C]coin
