THE RISING OF THE MOON
The Crown's indiscriminate use of the Insurrection Act insured a great deal of grass-roots emotional support for the De- fenders and Unitedmen. Many peasants went further, feeling they were "guilty" in the eyes of the authorities anyway. Black- smiths and carpenters forged pikes which were swiftly hidden in the thatch of cottages all round. Extra arms were stockpiled and watchwords were exchanged. An electric expectancy hummed among the common people of Ireland.
John Keegan Casey, a young Fenian poet writing three-score years later under the name "Leo," imagined that time vividly in this ballad. Destined to die in prison at age twenty-three, the precocious Westmeath man wrote the song when he was only four- teen. The title of the ballad has since become synonymous with Irish Rebellion. For over sixty years it was the most widely sung of all rebel songs and is rivalled, even today, only by Kevin Barry.

The Rising Of The Moon Song Lyrics & Chords In C
Oh,[C] then tell me Sean O'Farrell,
tell me[G] why you hurry so.
Hush me[F] Buchall hush and[C] listen,
and his[G] cheeks were all a-[C]glow.
I bear orders from the captain,
Get you[G] ready quick and soon,
For the[F] pikes must be to[C]gether
By the[G] Rising of the Moon.
Chorus:
By the[C] Rising of the Moon,
By the[G] Rising of the Moon,
For the[F] pikes must be to[C]gether
By the[G] Rising of the[C] Moon.
Oh, then tell me Sean O'Farrell
Where the gathering is to be.
In the old spot by the river,
Right well known to you and me.
One more word for signal token,
Whistle up the marching tune.
With your pike upon your shoulder
By the Rising of the Moon.
Chorus:
By the Rising of the Moon,
By the Rising of the Moon,
With your pike upon your shoulder
By the Rising of the Moon.
Out of many a mud wall cabin
Eyes were watching thru' the night.
Many a manly heart was throbbing
For the coming morning light.
Murmers ran along the valley,
Like the banshee's lonely croon,
And a thousand pikes were flashing
By the Rising of the Moon.
Chorus:
By the Rising of the Moon,
By the Rising of the Moon,
And a thousand pikes were flashing
By the Rising of the Moon.
There beside the singing river
That dark mass of men were seen,
Far above their shining weapons hung
Their own beloved green.
Death to every foe and traitor,
Forward strike the marching tune,
And hurrah me boys for freedom,
Tis the Rising of the Moon.
And they fought for poor old Ireland,
And full bitter was their fate,
Oh what glorious pride and sorrow,
Fills the name of ninety-eight!
Yet, thank God, e'en still are beating
Hearts in manhood burning noon,
Who would follow in their footsteps,
At the rising of the moon
Oh,[C] then tell me Sean O'Farrell,

Best Of The High Kings Album
Ten years ago, Irish record label boss Dave Kavanagh put together a show for broadcast on PBS in America, and four Irish musicians were invited to take part. The show was called The High Kings and the broadcast on PBS stations across America launched the band onto the music scene overnight.
Their debut album quickly followed and reached an impressive No 2 in Billboard's World Music chart. Within months, the four new members - Finbarr Clancy, Brian Dunphy, Martin Furey and Darren Holden - had clicked as a creative unit as well as friends, and knew that they were embarking on something special.
Each had a wealth of history in the music business behind them, but founder Kavanagh knew that in order to maintain any level of creative interest they would have to boldly go where no other Irish ballad group had gone before. In truth, back in the mid-late Noughties, Ireland needed a group like The High Kings. It was during The High Kings second tour of the US in 2011, however - having graduated from playing small venues to larger halls as they promoted their follow-up album, 'Memory Lane', which also crashed into Billboard's World Music chart- that everyone involved realised the fanbase was growing into something that no one had predicted.
The High Kings had achieved what many had thought improbable, if not impossible: they were moving the Irish ballad tradition into the here and now, carrying along with them the steadfast older fans while simultaneously bringing it to a new audience.
More was to come in 2013 with the group's third studio album, 'Friends For Life', which featured original songs among the traditional fare, and was co- produced by Sharon Shannon. This was followed by a two-year tour, culminating in a live CD & DVD release called 'Four Friends Live'. The group's fourth studio album, 'Grace & Glory', was released to critical acclaim in 2016.
To say that The High Kings are charting a new course for Irish ballad music - equal parts rousing and reflective, energetic and insightful - is an understatement. They are, essentially, marking out a new and bright era for Irish folk music.
