THE RED-VELVET STEERING WHEEL COVER DRIVER Song Lyrics And Chords

Easy version
Intro: C-Em-F-C  2x
I re(C)member one day, I was driving along
On the (Dm)Liverpool highway singing my (G)song
And the (C)day was as good as the (Am)road it was long
I was (Dm)on (D7)my (G)way
And (C)then up ahead, a black speck appeared
And (Dm)as I drew near, it was just as I (G)feared
Doing (C)twenty-five miles an (Am)hour in top gear
In the (Dm)out(D7)side (G)lane
Oh, dear (Am)me, Glory (G)be,
One of (Am)them I could (G)see
It was a (Am)red-(F)velvet (C)steering wheel (Am)cover
(C)Dri-(G)i-(C)ver

Chorus
Tra la (C)la, la-la-la-(Am)la-la
la-la-(Dm)la, la-la-la-(G)la

Well, (C)he and his wife, they sat side by side
In (Dm)their safety belts, they were safely (G)tied
And to(C)gether, they rode through the (Am)green countryside
Which they (Dm)could (D7)not (G)see
He had (C)two dingle-dangles that hung by a string
From the (Dm)mirror and in the back window this (G)thing
That kept (C)bobbing its head up and (Am)down the singular
(Dm)Stair (D7)at (G)me
Up and (Am)down, side to (G)side,
Keep your (Am)eyes open (G)wide
For the (Am)red-(F)velvet (C)steering wheel (Am)cover
(C)Dri-(G)i-(C)ver

Chorus
He’s got (C)two china ducks on his living-room wall
And a (Dm)bowl of pink, plastic flowers in the (G)hall
And a (C)souvenir ashtray that he (Am)bought in port-call
On his (Dm)ho(D7)li(G)day
And (C)when he gets home, he goes straight to his chair
And he (Dm)turns on the telly and all night he'll (G)stare
At the (C)girls and the gunfights and (Am)wish he were there
But he's (Dm)here (D7)to (G)stay
When he re(Am)grets what he didn't (G)see,

Then he will (Am)switch to IT(G)V
'Cause he's a (Am)red-(F)velvet (C)steering wheel (Am)cover
(C)Dri-(G)i-(C)ver

Chorus
Well, (C)each Friday morning, he takes his basket
To (Dm)town and he goes to the big super(G)market
And he (C)looks up and down and thinks (Am)oh, what a task
It's so (Dm)hard (D7)to (G)choose
For there’s (C)apple sponge pudding all topped with tasty-freeze
(Dm)Ready cut loaves, instant cake mix and (G)frozen peas
(C)All of those fifty-(Am)seven varieties
(Dm)Fresh (D7)to(G)day
Hermetically (Am)sealed, untouched by human (G)hands
Just 'neath those (Am)tins, think of all those gifts you might (G)win
When you're a (Am)red-(F)velvet (C)steering wheel (Am)cover (C)dri-(G)i-(C)ver

Chorus
Well, it's (C)Saturday night, it's a night for a fling
So, (Dm)throw on your glad-bags, ring-a-ding (G)ding
And go (C)down to the hall for a (Am)good game of bingo
And (Dm)cups (D7)of (G)tea
Then it's (C)back into bed and turn off the light
Puff the (Dm)hot-water bottle, sweet dreams and sleep (G)tight
And (C)God keep us from things that go (Am)bump in the night
But es(Dm)pe(D7)cia(G)lly
All of those (Am)dreams of the (G)day,
When our (Am)own children will (G)say
"My dad's a (Am)red-(F)velvet (C)steering wheel (Am)cover (C)dri-(G)i-(C)ver "

Chorus
(G)La-la-(C)la

Additional playing instruction for the advanced version
The advanced version of this song differs from the easy version ‚only’ by two additional chords G7 and G*. G*=3-2-0-0-3-3 is basically a variant of the easier ‚standard’ G major chord G=3-2-0-0-0-3 and both of them can be used as an alternative to each other in almost any song.
However, only the two of them together with G7=3-2-0-0-0-1 will create this nice little ‚riff’ in the song. Each of the three chords lasts only one beat in the riff, so the chord combination (G-G7-G*) will make one full 3/4-measure. The important thing is really to play the h-string of the G- and G7-chord and the high e-string of G* because these are the notes that make up the melody. All other notes/strings in the three chords are fully optional. G* may therefore be simplified to G*=3-2-0-0-3-X if you pick the chords or if you strum them with the high e-string damped from swinging by your small finger.
Please note that the riff is sometimes purely instrumental and sometimes sung by using the very first words of the following text line. This may also need some time. Marc Fahrbach 28-7-2013
