The Forgotten Children By Aidan Doyle
The Forgotten Children Words and music by Aidan Doyle ©. Gmail address Aidandoyle03@gmal.com This is a song about a true event in Irish history. On the week of the 1916 rising thirty eight children were killed by stray gun fire and forgotten about from this historical event for almost 100 years now. They were aged between two years to sixteen years old. I feel it is time to remember these children. More songs about the Easter Rising .
When the gun fire had stopped
And the smoke cleared away
Ireland had lost many brave men on that day
We sing of their bravery and their gallantry too
And the sacrifices for Ireland
They made were very true.
But the children of 16' we must remember as well,
For 38 of them on that fatal week had fell,
Their lives had now ceased in the blink of an eye,
From the age of 16 years to a poor infant boy.
Chorus
Remember the forgotten children who went out to play,
Not understanding what was going on that day,
We cherish all the children of our nation equally
Where in the words of the Proclamation Pearse read from the G.P.O.
Instrumental.
Where the bullets came from we never now will know
Were they from a rebel gun or were they from his foe,
All we know to this day is the bullets were astray,
And the poor unfortunate children got in the way.
A full century on we now here these tales,
For many of us never knew of the shame,
The children of 16' we should now commemorate ,
And write their names in stone to show it to our state.
Chorus
