[D]One morning early I walked [G]forth
By the[D] margin [G]of Lough[D] Leane
The [G]sunshine dressed the [D]trees in green
And summer[Bm] bloomed a[A]gain
I [G]left the town and[D] wandered on
Through fields all [Bm]green and [A]gay
And [D]whom should I meet but a colleen[G] sweet
At the[D] dawning[G] of the[D] day.

[D]No cap or cloak this maiden[G] wore
Her[D] neck and[G] feet were [D]bare
Down [G]to the grass in [D]ringlets fell
Her glossy[Bm] golden [A]hair
A [G]milking pail was [D]in her hand
She was lovely, [Bm]young and[A] gay
She [D]wore the palm from Venus[G] bright
By the [D]dawning [G]of the [D]day.

[D]On a mossy bank I sat me [G]down
With[D] the maiden [G]by my[D] side
With [G]gentle words I[D] courted her
And asked her to[Bm] be my [A]bride
She[G] said, "Young man don't[D] bring me blame"
And swiftly[Bm] turned a[A]way
And [D]the morning light was shining[G] bright
At the[D] dawning [G]of the[D] day

Time Signature: 4/4

🎸 Strumming Pattern

For a smooth, flowing Irish ballad rhythm, use either:

Simple Folk Strum:

Down – Down – Up – Up – Down – Up (↓↓↑ ↑↓↑)

or a slower, gentler version for verses:

Down… Down-Up… Down… Down-Up…

Verse 1
[G]One morning early I walked [C]forth
By the [G]margin [C]of Lough [G]Leane
The [C]sunshine dressed the [G]trees in green
And summer[Em] bloomed a[D]gain
I [C]left the town and [G]wandered on
Through fields all [Em]green and [D]gay
And [G]whom should I meet but a colleen [C]sweet
At the [G]dawning [C]of the [G]day.

Verse 2
[G]No cap or cloak this maiden [C]wore
Her [G]neck and [C]feet were [G]bare
Down [C]to the grass in [G]ringlets fell
Her glossy [Em]golden [D]hair
A [C]milking pail was [G]in her hand
She was lovely, [Em]young and [D]gay
She [G]wore the palm from Venus [C]bright
By the [G]dawning [C]of the [G]day.

Verse 3
[G]On a mossy bank I sat me [C]down
With [G]the maiden [C]by my [G]side
With [C]gentle words I [G]courted her
And asked her to [Em]be my [D]bride
She [C]said, "Young man don’t [G]bring me blame"
And swiftly [Em]turned a[D]way
And [G]the morning light was shining [C]bright
At the [G]dawning [C]of the [G]day.

🎶 Performance Tips

Keep the strumming soft during verses; add volume and fullness on the final line of each verse.

Use hammer-ons and pull-offs between G–C and C–G transitions for a more Celtic flavor.

Optionally add fingerpicked arpeggios (P–I–M–A pattern) on the intro for a gentle start.
