Mary Connolly was born in New York City. Her Mother was a fiddler of some renown. The Connollys were always musically inclined, her brothers Mattie and Peter have been leading dance bands for many years. One of a family of four, her brother Mike, a New York Policeman was more or less a Father to the young Family when their Father died. Mary was taken to Ireland at the age of 3, and raised in the atmosphere of traditional music at her Scotstown, Co. Monaghan home. At the age of 7, she won her first Feis medal, the first of many. She was educated at St. Louis Convent, Monaghan, and sang in the choir there. Mary won the title of "Ulster Ballad Queen," in 1959, and then joined the Pat Campbell Showband, touring throughout Ireland with them.
Mary returned to her native New York in 1963 and since reached the top of the Irish entertainment scene there. Shy, soft-spoken and quick to deprecate her unique, entirely original vocal style, Mary Connolly has emerged as an ac- claimed singer. She has appeared in Irish T.V. and Radio and performed in concert at Carnegie Hall. Mary is presently vocalist with her own group, "The Blarney Boys," and was vocalist with The Majestic Showband which included her brothers, Mattie and Peter, and her husband, Arthur Sherry. They were the leading band in Irish American ballrooms for over a dozen years. Mary and Arthur are the parents of two children, Derrick 8, and Brenda 4. The song, "The Special Years," on this record is dedicated to them.
As for Mary's repertory, "What I sing is the traditional music of Ireland," she says! "I sing the ballad music of the Celtic people. In these songs you will find the souls of a nation, melodic stories about their loves and their tears." That statement covers many of the songs included in this recorded collection. Mary is well equipped to sing the Music of the Irish by her background. Every song is sung with the grace of a natural artist who had the patience and the humility to learn her job. She doesn't sound like other girl singers, and her choice of songs is different, too. This is a record of contrasting emotions, in which Mary is supported by the richness of a fine music group.
