In Belfast lyrics and chords

The Wolfe Tones. Written by singer / songwriter Brian Warfield about the troubles in Northern Ireland. Return to Belfast folk songs .

C)Cast your eyes on a (F)spot, dear Lord, it’s a (C)spot that’s close to (G)hell,
It’s a (C)burning, boiling (F)cauldron, where (C)people, they must (G)dwell.
The (C)sun won’t shine in (F)my backyard, it’s (C)hidden by the (G)wall
The (C)moon and stars just (F)light the night for the (C)cat that claims the (G)wall.

In Bel(C)fast, there are (F)fears of your (C)neighbors and (F)strangers
In Bel(C)fast, there are songs to be (G)sung
In Bel(F)fast, there are fears of (C)war and of (Am)peace
Tell me (Bb)why, tell me what can be (G)done?

The (F)burning church, the (C)burnt out bars,
The (Bb)crying child, the (F)mother’s sigh
The (Bb)butchered fathers, the (F)murdered sons,
The (Bb)burnt out homes, those (Am)shameful (C)laws.

T’was the (G)policies of the government of (F)England over (C)centuries
To keep (F)Ireland divided by (G)religions of God
For if (F)ever the Catholics and (C)Protestants un(Am)ited
They’d (Bb)surely loose Ireland, the (G)jewel in the crown.

The (C)streets are dark and (F)empty, no (C)friendly face (G)abounds
The (C)soldiers with their (F)blackened face go (C)prowling through the (G)grounds.
The (C)spiral reaches (F)breaking point, the (C)bard has played his (G)tune
The (C)night owl hides its (F)eary face with the (C)fading of the (G)noon.

In Bel(C)fast, there are (F)fears of your (C)neighbours and (F)strangers
In Bel(C)fast, there are songs to be (G)sung
In Bel(F)fast, there are fears of (C)war and of (Am)peace
Tell me (Bb)why, tell me what can be (G)done?

The (F)burning church, the (C)burnt out bars,
The (Bb)crying child, on her (F)way to school
The (Bb)butchered fathers, the (F)murdered sons,
The (Bb)burnt out homes, those (Am)shameful (C)laws.

T’was the (G)policies of the government of (F)England over (C)centuries
To keep (F)Ireland divided by (G)religions of God
For if (F)ever the Catholics and (C)Protestants un(Am)ited
They’d (Bb)surely loose Ireland, the (G)jewel in the crown.
In Belfast Wolfe Tones. Written By Brian Warfield
Sectarian violence has no place in a civilised society
but it is a cancer that has plagued Ireland and the
Irish people for centuries. Many people across the
world often wonder why two Christian people are so
hurtful to each other. We are often asked for reasons
and explanations. There are no simple answers but
across the centuries there was a deliberate policy
perused by successive English Governments to keep the
Irish divided by religions of God. Many of us officials
in correspondence to their authorities, remarked that
if ever the Protestants and Catholics unite they would
lose Ireland. They kept the Irish people from positions
of power we imposed penal laws against the Catholic and
Presbyterian for centuries and made them pay tithes to
the established protestant church. The Irish people were
never bigoted or sectarian most of the loaders and
representatives of the people were Protestant.
