The hymn “How Great Thou Art” is a beloved and enduring Christian song that has been sung by millions of people around the world. Its poetic lyrics and powerful melody have made it a staple in worship services and gatherings for over a century. This thesis will explore the history and impact of this hymn, examining its origins, its message, and its lasting influence on the Christian faith.

The first known version of “How Great Thou Art” was a Swedish poem written by Carl Boberg in 1885. Boberg, a pastor and editor of a Christian newspaper, was inspired to write the poem after witnessing a thunderstorm in the countryside of Sweden. The beauty and power of the storm stirred within him a sense of awe and reverence for God, which he captured in his poem. Boberg’s words were set to a Swedish folk tune and became a popular hymn in Sweden.

In 1927, the English missionary Stuart K. Hine heard a Russian translation of the hymn while on a mission trip in Ukraine. He was moved by the lyrics and melody and translated the hymn into English, adding two additional verses. The hymn gained popularity in the English-speaking world and was first published in the United States in 1949. Since then, “How Great Thou Art” has been translated into over 100 languages and has become one of the most widely known and beloved hymns in the world.

One of the reasons for the enduring popularity of “How Great Thou Art” is its powerful message. The hymn is a declaration of God’s greatness and a celebration of His love and mercy. It begins by praising God for His creation, declaring “O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made.” This acknowledgement of God as the creator of the universe sets the tone for the rest of the hymn, which continues to exalt Him for His mighty deeds and unfailing love.
