The Fureys and Davy Arthur [ songs ] recorded this folk song. Also recorded by Shane MacGowan And The Popes, written by Gerry Rafferty, the same man who wrote Baker Street.. The second set of chords are the one's used for the Shane MacGowan And The Popes youtube version of the song. The sheet music and tin whistle notes are included.

The[D] coat she wore still lies upon the[G] bed,
The[A] book I gave her that she never[D] read
She[D] left without a single word to[G] say
And her[A] father didn't like me any[D]way

She always wanted more than I could give
She wasn't happy with the way we lived
I could have felt like asking her to stay
But her father didn't like me anyway.

[Chorus]
[C]Daddy never[G] knew just[D] what she saw in me
[C]Daddy didn't[G] like my[D] hair
[C]Perhaps if we had[G] talked he'd have seen [D]something in me
But[G] daddy didn't[G] really[D] care.

To tell the truth I didn't have the nerve
I know I only got what I deserved
So now she's taken leave of me today
Her haddy didn't like me anyway

🎸 Strumming Pattern (Gentle Folk 4/4)

Pattern:

D – D U – U D U
(Down, Down-Up, Up-Down-Up)

Count:

1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &
D – D U – U D U

Feel:

Keep the rhythm steady and flowing, not too percussive.

Accent beats 2 and 4 slightly for a lilting, folk feel.

On emotional lines (e.g. “...didn’t like me anyway”), let the chord ring instead of full strum.

🎶 Fingerpicking Tab (First Verse & Chorus)

A Travis-picking style works beautifully here — alternating bass with a light melody pattern.

Picking pattern (per chord):

Thumb (P) alternates bass
Index (i) = G string
Middle (m) = B string
Pattern: P (bass) – i (G) – m (B) – i (G)

💡 Performance Tips

Thumb keeps the bass pulse steady — that’s your rhythm section.

On [F] → [C] transitions, let the chords linger a moment for emotion.

Add occasional hammer-ons on G (A-string 0→2) and Am (D-string 0→2) for character.

For the last “care”, slow down and let the D chord ring out for a tender ending.
