El Salvador Song Lyrics And Guitar Chords

Written By Johnny Duhan and recorded by singer Christy Moore.

A (Em) girl cries out in the (D) early morning,
(B) Woken by the sound of a (Em) gun;
She knows somewhere (D) someone is dying,
(B) Bleeding in the rising (C) sun.
(G) Outside the window (D) of her cabana
(C) Shadows are full of her (B) fear;
(G) She knows her lover (D) is out there somewhere –
(C) He’s been fighting now for a (B) year
To heal (C) the soul (D) of El Salvador (Em).

The moon like a skull is over the country,
The sky to the east is blood-red.
A general wakes up and takes his coffee
While he sits on his bed.
Outside the barracks soldiers are marching back
With their guns in their hands;
The general goes out, salutes his army,
And issues new commands;
He makes the guns roar in El Salvador.
Bells ring out in a chapel steeple;
A priest prepares to say mass.
A sad congregation come tired and hungry
To pray their troubles will pass.
Meanwhile the sun rises over the dusty streets
Where the bodies are found;
Flies and mosquitoes are drinking from pools of blood
Where a crowd gathers round;
They cry for the soul of El Salvador.
