Danny Boy lyrics
Danny Boy lyrics
Oh[C] Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are[F] calling
From glen to[C] glen, and down the mountain[G] side
The summer's[C] gone, and all the flowers are[F] dying
'tis you, 'tis[C] you must [G]go and I must [C]bide.

But[C7] come you[F] back when[G] summer's in the [C]meadow
Or[C7] when the[F] valley's[G] hushed and white with snow
'tis I'll be[C] there in[F] sunshine or in[C] sha[Am]dow
Oh Danny[C] boy, oh Danny[F] boy, I[G] love you[C] so.

And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me.

And I shall hear, tho' soft you tread above me
And all my dreams will warm and sweeter be
If you'll not fail to tell me that you love me
I simply sleep in peace until you come to me.

This is a beautiful, classic ballad. It is most often played as a slow waltz, which is in 3/4 time (counting 1-2-3, 1-2-3).

The chord placement you have is great, but it works even better if we spread it across the waltz timing.

🎸 Strumming Pattern (3/4 Waltz Time)
The best pattern for this song is a simple, gentle waltz strum.

Standard Pattern: DOWN - down - up (Strum DOWN on beat 1, and down-up on beats 2 and 3)

Simple Pattern: If the one above is tricky, just play three simple down-strums per measure, with a little more emphasis on the first one. DOWN - down - down

🎵 Chords and Lyrics
Here are all the verses, with the chords placed to fit the 3/4 waltz time. This means you'll play one strumming pattern (e.g., DOWN-down-up) for each chord symbol listed.

Tip: Notice that some lines have many chords (like [C] [C] [C]), which means you play one pattern for each. Other lines (like [G]side [G]) mean you play the pattern twice on the G chord.

(Verse 1)
Oh[C] Danny[C] boy, the[F] pipes, the[F] pipes are[C] calling[C]
From[C] glen to[C] glen, and[G] down the[G] mountain[G] side[G]
The[C] summer's[C] gone, and[F] all the[F] flowers are[C] dying[C]
'tis[C] you, 'tis[G] you must[G] go and[C] I must[C] bide.[C]

(Verse 2)
But[C7] come you[F] back when[G] summer's[G] in the[C] meadow[C]
Or[C7] when the[F] valley's[G] hushed and[G] white with[G] snow[G]
'tis[C] I'll be[F] there in[C] sunshine[Am] or in[Am] shadow[Am]
Oh[C] Danny[F] boy, oh[G] Danny[G] boy, I[C] love you[C] so.[C]

(Verse 3)
And[C] if you[C] come, when[F] all the[F] flowers are[C] dying[C]
And[C] I am[C] dead, as[G] dead I[G] well may[G] be[G]
You'll[C] come and[C] find the[F] place where[F] I am[C] lying[C]
And[C] kneel and[G] say an[G] "Ave"[C] there for[C] me.[C]

(Verse 4)
And[C7] I shall[F] hear, tho'[G] soft you[G] tread a[C]bove me[C]
And[C7] all my[F] dreams will[G] warm and[G] sweeter[G] be[G] If[C] you'll
not[F] fail to[C] tell me[Am] that you[Am] love me[Am] I[C] simply[F]
sleep in[G] peace un[G]til you[C] come to[C] me.[C]
