WHISKEY IN THE JAR (Kilgary Mountain)
This is an American version of an Irish street ballad. In American versions the title, or at least the point of reference, often is the "Gilgary" or "Kilgary" Mountain-probably a mistaken, or folk-adapted, reference to the far-famed Kerry Mountains of Ireland (since there is no Gilgary or Kilgary Mountain in Ireland). In the Kingdom of Kerry you will find some of the most beautiful country in the world: a profusion of peninsulas surrounded by a rugged, restless sea; lakes and glens; and towering, majestic mountains. Jenny, not Molly, is the deceiving woman in most Irish versions. And in the Irish songs our rakish hero fails to escape from the law when he is caught.
With all the above facts at hand you might try reweaving the lyric into a version that would be more widely appreciated in Killarney. Replace "Gilgary" with "Kerry" in the first line, let Jenny take Molly's place, and throw out verses four and five in favor of:
And if anyone can help me it's my brother in the army.
If I only knew his station, it's in Cork or Killarney.
And if he'd come and join me we'd go rovin' in Kilkenny.
I know he'd treat me fairer than my darlin', sportin' Jenny.
An Australian version introduces still another mountain and ties in the story with Australian history. Sir Frederick Pottinger was police inspector for the Lachlan gold field in New South Wales. Because he tried to put down bushranging (outlawry), he became a frequent target for bushrangers and satirists; he died in 1865 when one of his own pistols accidentally exploded.
