The Quays of Galway Town Lyrics
This song is from the super Wild Geese LP called
The Quays of Galway Town.
Tells the story about one of the many Wild Geese in the 17th centuary who went to Spain, Murrach Og O' Flaherty his name from a very well known Family from Galway
as Cromwell & his English soldier scum tried to burn out & get rid of all the Irish People on the Island of Ireland. Murrach Og, joined up with the King of Spain & fought in the wars.
He became Captain of a Galleon Ship & came back to Galway to marry his Girl Nora.
Tony Small from the modern day Wild Geese Folk Group learned this beautiful song from his Father John Small.
The Wild Geese are Tony Small, Peadar O hUallaigh, Steve Power, Norman King. The lyrics for the song were sent to me by Patrick Burke.
And while your here, here's the most recent song to the site about this west of Ireland City called Galway Girl Song which I never realized at the time of adding it to the site would become so popular.

1
The market place is all astir
The sombre streets are gay
And Lo! a stately galleon
Lies anchored in the bay
The colleens shy,the sturdy boys
Are swiftly trooping down
To greet the Spanish sailors
On the Quays of Galway town
2
Oh Nora, golden Nora
What matters it to you ?
I see there's love for strangers'in
Those genteel eyes o'blue
So therefore don your ringlets
Put on your silken gown
To greet the Spanish sailors
On the Quays of Galway town
3
Says Nora,golden Nora
Her laughter held a tear
I've donned my silks & laces
Because my love is near
All among the Spanish crew is one
Who should wear a kingly crown
Although he walks a landless man
Today through Galway town
4
He fought in Spain's red sieges
And he won a Captains place
But would his arms had raised to
strike
In battle of his race!
His boyhood saw with bitter grief
Poor Connaught loose reknown
When the stylish crushes the valiant
On the streets of Galway town
5
Look forth see yond his dusky head
Tower high above the throng
And brave is he and true is he
And so my lips have sung
He is no Spanish Sailor though
He wears the jerkin brown
But Murrach Og Ö Flaherty
Comes back to Galway town
6
Then up the street stepped Murrach Og
And down stepped Nora Bawn
Had ever sailor sweeter love
Sweet sweet as Autumns dawn
Their glad lips clung together
Such bliss all grief must dawn,
God guard those faithfull lovers
Cried we in Galway town
7
And tonight will be our Wedding night
With the Holy Priest to bless
Shall we remember Cromwells laws
Amidst such happiness
When my true love's arms are around of me
Should they come with fighting frown
His sword would cleave a pathway for
His Bride through Galway town
8
And far across the ocean
The good ship sailing now
And Murrach Og O'Flaherty
Stands tall beside the brow
And Nora,golden Nora
A Bride in Queenly gown
She sailed away that very day
From her kin in Galway town.
