How To Make Your Tin Whistle Sound Quiet
Here's a tip to make your tin whistle sound quieter. Simply place a piece of Blu-tack on one side of the ''Blade'' of the whistle. The blade is the hole in the mouthpiece / fipple. The best result I got was when I covered two thirds of the hole with the blu-tac. I found it reduced the sound by about half.
This is ideal if you don't want to bother your neighbours.
Whistle players have been looking for a way to make their playing quieter for donkey's years, now you know how to do it. Have a listen to the youtube video I made and you'll hear that the volume increases two fold when I remove the blu-tack from the hole.

This little trick will also be ideal for playing those songs that have the really high notes like Danny Boy and Boolavogue, where's once you would have ran a mile rather than play them, not any more, thanks to that little bit of putty.
Be aware that using this method will put you out of key. It's fine if you're only playing for you're own enjoyment but if you are playing with other musicians you won't really know what key you're playing in as using the blu-tack will alter the sound coming out of the whistle |
