[D]Come by the[G] hills to the[A] land where[G] fancy is [D]free
And[D] stand where the[G] peaks meet the[D] sky and the[G] lochs meet the[A] sea
Where the[D] rivers run clear and the[G] bracken is[D] gold in the[A] sun
Ah, the[D] cares of to-[G]morrow can[A] wait 'til[G] this day is[D] done
Oh, come by the hills to the land where life is a song
And sing while the birds fill the air with their joy all day long
Where the trees sway in time and even the wind sings in tune
Ah, the cares of to-morrow can wait 'til this day is done
Come by the hills to the land where legend re-mains
Where stories of old fill the heart and may yet come a-gain
Where our past has been lost and the future has still to be won
Ah, the cares of to-morrow can wait 'til this day is done.
Repeat the first verse.

Buachaill ón Eirne mé's bhréagfainn féin cailín deas óg
Né iarfainn bó spré léithe tá mé saibhir go leor 'S liom

(Here is translation:
I am a boy from Ireland and I'd coax a nice young girl,
I wouldn't ask for a dowry with her, I'm rich enough myself,
I own Cork, big as it is both sides of the glen and Tyrone,
And if I don't change my ways I'll be the heir for County Mayo.)

I first heard the Irish singer Michael Hipkiss preform this song at his club in Birmingham. When I say ''Club'' I'm describing a room above a pub called The Contemptibles
in the centre of Birmingham. Michael booked the room every Sunday evening and he had a number of regular singers and musicians who were regular performers. Each week there would be a guest musician who would
normally be a professional. That was the basic modus operandi of the clubs that went to make up the British folk scene in the 1960s. There were about 1,500 of these clubs around Britain, many of them with very
varied musical politics.
