Emmet Cahill's Ireland Album
One of the most personal, enjoyable and formative aspects of creating this album, was looking back on my many happy childhood memories of growing up in Ireland.
I have always felt a very natural sense of pride in my homeland.
This was instilled in me by my parents at a very young age, learning from them, as I did, the many wonderful songs and stories that so eloquently portray the Irish tradition.
Throughout my travels in recent years, I have listened to stories from so many people about their love of our songs, our culture and our folklore. It is clear that this awareness of 'being' Irish continues to resonate far beyond Ireland's ancient shores.
Storytelling is truly the hallmark of our identity and a deep part of our heritage enshrining both pride in our past, joy in the present and our hopes for the future.
I feel honoured to follow in the footsteps of great Irish singers of the past like Count John McCormack, Josef Locke and Frank Patterson and to be given the opportunity of imparting these stories to a new generation.
My wish for you all is that these songs evoke in you many happy memories of days gone by, and create moments that you will cherish for many years to come.
There are a few very special people who have had an integral role in making this album a reality.
Firstly, to David Munro and Seamus Brett, who were ever present in the creation of this album. Thank you for your wonderful musicianship, for challenging me every step of the way, and most of all, for sharing in a vision of portraying these songs with the honesty and integrity that they so richly deserve.
I know that we will look back on this creative journey with a great sense of pride.
To Sharon Browne, I never imagined that a last minute trip to an audition in Belfast 6 years ago would lead me to this point. Thank you for showing some faith in a young lad from Mullingar, and giving him a chance to live out his dream.
To my wonderful parents, for teaching me to be proud of who I am, where I come from and for sharing your gift of music. To Laura and Aaron, for never failing to offer your wisdom, guidance and support whenever it is needed.
I hope to honour that unquenchable faith you have shown in me, by making you proud today and every day.
To the fans, thank you for the incredible goodwill, generosity and support that you continue to show. I look forward to sharing this exciting journey with you all for many years to come.
Emmet
As a Scotsman I think I'm well placed to be an observer of a phenomenon that seems to be as consistent as it is inexplicable.
That phenomenon is where a single Irishman seems to charm the worldwide listening public with his singing voice. It is obvious that Frank Patterson, Josef Locke and John McCormack achieved great fame but it has always fascinated me as to what the special quality was that elevated them above the rest.
Apart from possessing a naturally beautiful voice, all these men had that ubiquitous 'X factor. I firmly believe that this virtue is honesty. In a world where people struggle to find things that they can trust, I find great comfort in a singing voice that exudes honesty.
When I first heard Emmet Cahill sing some years ago, I was struck by this very quality. As we've continued to work together over the years I am further convinced that Emmet is perfectly placed to be the next Irishman in this prestigious lineage.
