The Bedford Van Lyrics By Seamus Moore
The Bedford Van Lyrics Chords And Sheet Music. Recorded By Seamus Moore. [ Irish Travelers Song ] More songs by Irish singer Seamus Moore .
I was born in a place called Kilkenny town
I belong to the tinker clan
I've no fixed abode I'm well known on the road
And I drive an old Bedford Van.
We travel around from town to town
Me and the wife Sally-Ann
At night we just park cuddle up in the dark
In the back of the old Bedford van.
The first time that I met Sally
'twas a mile or so outside Strabane
She was thumbing a lift sure I couldn't resist
I soon got her into me van
She threw her arms around me
I knew I was getting on grand
On that very same night she proposed to me
In the back of the old Bedford van
On our honeymoon over in Glasgow
We was stopped by a big Policeman
He said to me you don't drink and drive here
He put the breathiliser into me van
Next morning in court I had to report
On trial now I had to stand
And I wished now I had Maggie Thacher
In the back of me old Bedford van.
One day we were parking near Hackballscross
Sally was making the tea,
When a big girl came past with her mini half mased
She was smiling and winking at me
But Sally drew out and she hit her a clout
With whatever she had in her hand
Well I had to give her the old tips of life
In the back of me old Bedford van.
One day we went to Ballycastle
Sure you've hear of the ould Lamass Fair
Met a few pals we knew and we went for the brew
One hell of a time we had there
And coming home Sally took sick
For she ate too much Yellow Man
And I must confess there was one hell of a mess
In the back of the old Bedford van
Now all young me who drive an auld van
This warning take it from me
And don't be too quick to pick up a lass
No matter how sweet she may be.
For if and you start your auld carry-on
And finish up holding her hand
You'll be left with a wife for the rest of your life
In the back of the auld Bedford van
You'll be left with a wife for the rest of your life
In the back of the auld Bedford van
I belong to the tinker clan

He say to me " Don't drink and drive here," slipped the breathlyzer

I took her to old Ballycastle you ' ve heard of the ' Aul' Lammas Fair'
We met quite a few aul' pals we knew and we had a hectic time

And w hen coming home now Sally took sick for she ate too much "Yellow Man"
And I must confess she made a terrible mess in the back of the au l' Bedford Van .
One day we were parked at Springtown, Sally was making some toa.
A big dame strolled past with her skirt at half mast started smiling
and winking at me .
Sally drew out , she hit her a clout with whatever she had in her hand ,
.And that night I gave her the " kiss of life " in the back of the aul ' Bedford Van:
Now you young men who drive a van a warning take by me ,
Don ' t be too quick to pick up a wee lass no matter how sweet she may be .
For if you start your aul ' carry on or you start holding her hand ,
Yo u'll end up with a wife for the rest of your life in the back of the

The following notes are from Jimmy McBride.
This song is aired regularly by John Walker of Fahan and Michael Mclaughlin of Cockhill , Buncrana. It is of a recent composition certainly within the last forty yea rs and it relates of what can happen to a young man who invites a lady to ride with him in his Bedford Van. Maggie Thatcher is involved only because she happened to be the P.M. of Britian at the time of recording . Another source reminded me that he heard it sung in the 1950' s and "auld McMi11an " was the victim then. The reference to the breathalyser is also of recent origin and the sam e inform ant said that it was " a summons" that was in the original version .
Springt own was an infamous complex of Nissan huts on the out- skirts of Derry City - built to house U.S. Navy personnel during World War 2. It contained all the necessary fa cilities to house troops in transit . At the end of the war the Yanks left. taking with them the con- tents but le aving the bare stark huts behind . Because of the chronic housing pro blems in tha city at that time a lot of pe ople moved into the huts. The condition of the huts deteriorated rapidly as ordinary san itation , electricity and the basic necessities were lacking and the place beca me a gheno, certainty a situation that would not be tolerated tod ay. The c amp was closed in 1967 and demolished. Today , thankfully, Springtown rings a happier note, for it boasts of a fine in - dustrial es tate that gives amployment to possibly some of the fine cit izens of the historic city of Derry who were once reared in the hellhole called " Springtown Camp."
The Sheet Music, which is very much the same tune as The Black Velvet Band.
